Using Game Theory to Improve at Blood Bowl – VII – Behavioural Game Theory and Psychology

Humans Are Not Rational Agents

Classical Game Theory assumes rational actors who consistently maximise expected value. In practice, Blood Bowl is played by humans operating under time pressure, emotional investment, incomplete information, and different skill levels… and hangovers. As a result, players exhibit deviations from optimal play.

There are patterns to these deviations formed from regular responses to stress, uncertainty, and loss of control. Understanding this allows players to anticipate mistakes without relying on deception or manipulation. The aim is not to trick an opponent, but to recognise where human preference diverges from mathematical optimisation.

Common tendencies include aversion to visible risk, overreaction to rare but vivid outcomes, and resistance to lines that feel passive even when they are correct. Players also systematically misjudge low‑probability catastrophic events, either dismissing them until they occur or overweighting them once they have been named. 

None of these behaviours require the opponent to play badly in a technical sense. They arise naturally from how people process uncertainty.


Risk Aversion, Risk Seeking, and Score Context

One of the strongest behavioural patterns in Blood Bowl is asymmetrical risk tolerance. 

Players frequently fail to adapt their risk tolerance to the score context. When ahead some players tend to accept unnecessary risk, often rationalised as pressing an advantage, while players who are behind frequently avoid risk even when it is required to remain competitive, or over adjust to super risky plays in situations that don’t yet warrant that level of risk. We talked about this a little in part 2 when discussing adjusting variance. But let’s explore the underlying psych reasons.

Both over and under risk tolerance behaviours are rooted in emotional responses. Being ahead can feel fragile, so players act to speed the game up, whereas being behind can feel discouraging, so players avoid actions that could make the situation feel worse, even if doing nothing guarantees loss. Game‑theoretic thinking reframes this as a mismatch between actual and perceived variance needs. 

Strong players learn to recognise these moments not only in themselves, but in their opponents and then use that recognition to gain an advantage.


Example.

An opponent has a 1-0 lead at half time and has secured the ball on their drive. There is no opportunity for immediate pressure from your team. They likely will be thinking “make it 2-0 and the game is won”. Rather than taking your own low‑probability hero plays yourself, you could adopt lines that appear passive but actually invite overextension. For example, leaving a tempting ” gaping hole” that will encourage your opponent to stretch unsafely into what is actually trap space. This IS risky, but can be effective against opponents who feel confident or impatient. If your team isn’t naturally built for sacking opportunities, exploiting the cognitive bias might be your best route to getting back into the game.


To gain an advantage in this way relies on understanding that many players equate control with action, and safety with visible dominance. When ahead, they are often more willing to gamble in order to accelerate the win, even when the structurally strongest play would be restraint. A failed aggressive action by the player who is ahead can invert initiative and collapse their advantage. This makes encouraging overreach an especially effective strategy against technically strong opponents who are nevertheless emotionally invested in converting advantage quickly. 

The concept of playing into your opponent’s psychological responses reframes certain defensive choices. For example, a line that appears overly conservative, like declining to challenge immediately, not going all-in early, or retreating one square further than required can all function as invitations rather than concessions. The goal is not to appear weak, but to present the opponent with choices that feel powerful yet carry asymmetric downside if they fail. Over time, this can produce the same swing potential as a hero play, but with substantively lower self‑inflicted risk.


Tilt, Frustration, and Decision Degradation

Tilt can manifest as a dramatic loss of control, but more commonly (and less obviously) it is a gradual narrowing of perspective under frustration. It is characterised by shortened planning horizons (playing the turn rather than the drive/game), increased emotional investment in specific outcomes, and reduced willingness to accept neutral or stabilising plays.

In Blood Bowl, tilt often emerges after sequences where the opponent succeeds repeatedly, even if nothing objectively catastrophic has occurred. “Those dice only have 6s on them!” Players under tilt frequently seek immediate resolution through high‑impact plays, mistaking emotional relief for strategic necessity.

For the non-tilted player, the tilt represents an opportunity to apply pressure that will demand continued discipline to relieve. Tilted players will often reveal their intentions earlier, commit more deeply than necessary, or abandon flexible positions prematurely. Recognising these shifts in behaviour allows stronger players to maintain steady play rather than responding in kind.

A tilted opponent often stops maximising win probability and starts maximising emotional satisfaction.


Academic Research into Tilt applied to Blood Bowl

An interesting thing is that the research doesn’t completely support the folk wisdom of “your opponent is tilted, therefore make them roll more dice”. There’s a little more nuance.

What the literature does support is a more general conclusion:

When people are emotionally dysregulated, decision quality declines, they become more prone to cognitive distortions, and they are more likely to abandon considered strategies in favour of emotionally satisfying actions. [pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov],

If we translate that into Blood Bowl, the optimal response is probably not to change your strategy dramatically. Instead, it is to create situations where a small degradation in decision quality produces large positional consequences.

From a game-theory perspective, the best response is:

Don’t try to exploit the tilt directly. Exploit the mistakes the tilt creates.

But how do we do that:

1. Increase the number of decision points

Sports psychology research generally suggests that anger narrows attention and promotes action-oriented responses rather than balanced evaluation. [appliedspo…tpsych.org], [neurolaunch.com]

So, if the opponent is making decisions poorly, force more decisions.

For example:

  • Present multiple defensive weaknesses.
  • Create dilemmas.
  • Offer several possible blitz targets.
  • Force them to prioritise between objectives.

A calm coach may navigate the dilemmas correctly. A tilted coach is more likely to choose the emotionally attractive option.

2. Avoid providing obvious heroic plays

Tilted players often become risk-seeking. Research on losses and emotional threat suggests people become increasingly willing to accept risk when trying to recover from setbacks. [insightdash.co], [pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

If that’s true, then offering them a spectacular 5+ dodge, 2GFI 1D sack attempt may actually help them (if it works) because they were looking for a dramatic recovery anyway.

Tilt often manifests as impatience, so, instead of offering a sliver of a chance, force them into a series of mundane efficient decisions. Play tighter.


Exploitation Versus Robust Play

Behavioural Game Theory raises an important strategic tension: whether to exploit known weaknesses in a specific opponent, or to adopt lines that remain sound regardless of opponent behaviour. 

Exploitative play can yield immediate advantage by targeting predictable habits. However, it often introduces fragility by relying on assumptions about how the opponent will respond. Robust play, by contrast, may sacrifice short‑term gains in exchange for positions that remain strong even if the opponent reacts optimally.


Examples.

Dusher is known for being (in my opinion) overly passive in his play. He prefers to column and screen rather than cage dive and will usually turn down early opportunities. Exploitive play into a passive player would involve choosing to use a standard X-cage early in drives, leaving 5+ dive opportunities for his elves, rather than an H-cage or Vengabus. With fewer pieces required for ball protection, you would then have more pieces available to press-in, adopt a wider shape, foul, create space etc, making it easier to get downfield. However, just because he doesn’t usually dive, doesn’t mean he won’t this time. Optimal, robust, play might be to put the driver into the cage. 

In contrast, Mike (Divergent) has a “smash first, ask questions later” approach. Often we need to remind him that there is a ball. Exploitive play here could be to hang a juicy target piece out that he couldn’t resist blitzing and fouling. Once he takes that bait, you can take the opportunity to isolate the fouling crew from the ball carrier crew, splitting the team and creating pressure where it matters. Robust play wouldn’t involve risking your juicy target.


Advanced Blood Bowl involves choosing between exploitation and robustness deliberately rather than unconsciously.

Over‑exploitation can lead to self‑inflicted problems, while excessive robustness can miss opportunities where an opponent’s predictable behaviour could be punished. The key is to exploit only where the downside is limited and to fall back on robust structures elsewhere. Against not as strong players, there should also be a strong feeling of “trust the process”, just play good tight BB and you will get results. 

Cognitive Biases

I want to end this section by highlighting common cognitive biases that apply to Blood Bowl players. Being aware of these biases doesn’t stop them affecting you or your opponent, but it should shape your self assessment of where things went wrong. 

Confirmation Bias
You seek out evidence that supports your preferred strategy or belief and ignore data that contradicts it. Example: “I always blitz with my Wardancer turn one, it always works!” (ignoring the games where it didn’t). Reflection: Am I evaluating my plays based true game context or previous experience?

Gambler’s Fallacy
You believe that past dice rolls influence future ones, even though each roll is independent. Example: “I’ve failed three dodges, surely the next one will succeed!” Reflection: Am I making decisions based on probability (expected value), or superstition?

Outcome Bias
You judge a decision based on its result rather than the quality of the decision itself. Example: “That risky play worked, so it was the right call.” Reflection: Am I evaluating based on outcome or on the decision?

Equiprobability Bias

Quite similar to outcome bias… the tendency to assume all outcomes are equally likely simply because there are multiple possibilities. Example: “Don’t tell me the odds”, “Everything’s 50/50. Either it works or it doesn’t.” When assessing a play, try to replace “it might work” with “how often does it work?”

Dunning–Kruger Effect
You overestimate your understanding or skill level, especially in early stages of learning. Example: “I’ve played five games; I know how to counter every team.” or “My Minotaur with tentacles team went 2-1-0 therefore my plan must work”. Reflection: Am I open to feedback and aware of what I still don’t know?

Hindsight Bias
You believe the outcome was predictable after the fact, even if it wasn’t at the time. Example: “Of course they scored early, I should’ve seen that coming.” Reflection: Did I truly have the information to foresee that, or am I rewriting the past?

Anchoring Bias
You rely too heavily on the first piece of information you received. Example: “They said their team was bashy, so I played overly cautious all game.” Reflection: Did I adapt my strategy as the game evolved?

Social Proof Bias
You assume a strategy is correct because others use it. Example: “Everyone plays Necro with 4 Guard and 3 Block, so I should too” Reflection: Is this approach right for my playstyle with this team?


Using Game Theory to Improve. 

Review

Develop awareness of common cognitive biases in your own play and learn to expect them in others.

In post‑game review, reflect on what you were feeling at different points. Try to identify decisions where emotional discomfort influenced your choices more than board state. Also note occasions where an exploitative attempt backfired; where robust play could have simplified the game. Conversely, try to identify opportunities where a pattern of play could have been identified and then exploited.

In your reflection, look for the different lines you could have adopted with the benefit of hindsight. The thought exercise here is about becoming better at recognising traits. Practice identifying when a play relies on the opponent behaving in a particular way, and assess whether that reliance is acceptable given the game state. “I thought you would… “.

This might be apparent in your review as times when you were surprised by what your opponent did. When those situations occur, look at why you were surprised and decide if you misread the signals or just hadn’t considered the line.

Practice

We’ve suggested in earlier posts about training yourself to assess required variance dynamically. The next stage is to try to remove the feelings from the process and instead focus on objective measures.

To move the thought process away from emotions, try to explicitly note whether you are ahead or behind in structural terms and choose your risk accordingly and deliberately. You don’t need to say it out loud, but consciously process “I need to increase/decrease my risk profile.” and evaluating how much, is a useful thing to do between your turns.

Learn to recognise early signs of tilt in yourself and deliberately slow your decision‑making when they appear. 

For opponent assessment, watch for sudden changes in tempo, language, or commitment that suggest emotional pressure. Dice whining can be an indicator here. Yes, it’s annoying but it might also mean there is something you can exploit. 

Improvement shows when you are able to maintain consistent play through unfavourable sequences and when opponents under pressure begin to simplify their own decision space prematurely.

    Lots to digest there Kev! I do occasionally go back and look at games typically ‘where did it all ho wrong’ and try to consider alternatives. The tricky thing is that if you assume the same dice will appear regardless then would it change the outcome?

    A good example I can give is a game verses Fireoli three seasons ago. Oli’s high elves successfully caged dived popped my gnomes ball, which annoying scattered favourably for a dodge catcher to pick up and potato down the pitch. My gnomes had to scramble to catch the catcher my sack attempt resulted in pushes but I did have enough material to stop any forward progress and screen off the rest of the elves. Oli had a call to make a either make a series of dodges to get back to his team mates or take the long route and add two rushes. Oli took the multiple dodges and snaked leaving me with easy access to the ball. But the alternative would have meant rush failure but the ball would have been very close to all the other elves… still a turnover but better outcome and a good lesson learnt!
