Every move you make in Blood Bowl provides information.

Imperfect Information in Blood Bowl
In Blood Bowl we always need to use imperfect or incomplete information to make decisions. The biggest barrier is that we (obviously) don’t know what the dice will say; future outcomes are concealed until the math rocks emerge from under the dice cup. In addition, opponents also conceal intentions, and the board state does not uniquely determine what will happen next. Unlike deterministic games, there is no single sequence of actions that guarantees success, only decisions that shift probabilities. This uncertainty is one of the game’s defining strategic features. It is also a large part of why it is great!
Recognising imperfect information helps explain why apparently similar games can unfold differently. A decision that is structurally sound may lead to a loss simply because hidden outcomes resolve unfavourably (which could be, but isn’t always, poor dice). Conversely, weak decisions can occasionally succeed without punishment… which can be extremely frustrating!
We can never eliminate uncertainty. but we should attempt to manage it. At first this is just “safe moves first” and rolling high probability actions first. But as we progress as players this evolve into creating positions where a wide range of stochastic outcomes are still acceptable. Where bad dice doesn’t collapse a position.
Adopting Game‑theory thinking to your play in this context means learning to judge decisions based on the quality of the information they were based on, rather than by how the concealed elements were resolved. As we said in part I: there are no dice.

The Value of Information
Information has value because it informs and changes what you should/can do next. Early actions generate information that reshapes later optimal play.
You know this of course as frequently you’ll be thinking, “I’ll do this block first as I need to know its outcome to determine what else needs to happen”. From a game theory perspective, we expand that to the level of the whole game. The information from whether a drive succeeds, whether a one‑turn attempt is viable, or how much defensive pressure materialises, how many removals you have got/sustained all inform how much risk and which specific risks should be taken in the remainder of the game.
To illustrate this we’ll take the first decision we make in a game: kick versus receive, and consider the effect in terms of information acquisition and timing. Let’s get the caveat in early; this example is to allow conceptual discussion, it’s not a suggestion that all teams should kick or receive… there’s more to that decision than information theory.

Receiving first and getting your drive done in 8 turns, such that you are leading 1-0 at HT is great. Nothing surprising there. But from an information theory perspective, you usually won’t know at the start of the second half if your opponent intends to aim for an 8-turn drive for a draw, or if they intend to score quickly in 2/3 turns to push for the win. They have that information, you don’t.
The win vs draw intention information will slowly reveal and may change based on how the drive progresses. Even if they set up for a two-turn drive, a deep kick, burning an early RR, or a poor LOS might change the plan. Similarly acquired information might change a stall intention into a win (mass removals from early blocks for example, or opponent out of RRs). As more and more information becomes available it should change your EV calculations for actions and variance tolerance to attempt to force the outcomes you desire.
Kicking first, in contrast, puts you in the situation where you have greater information. You should know what you want to do! If your defence and any short drive or one turn attempt fail, you learn information about how much variance to inject if you want to push for a win and how much to secure a draw. If your defence succeeds and you take a lead into the second half, you acquire the right to reduce variance substantially on your own drive.
There is a cost for this info; LOS attrition exposure. And as discussed in part 3; you have greater freedom to adopt an aggressive defence when the time-horizon is shorter.
Thinking in information theory terms turns kick versus receive decision from a “receiving is always best” mantra or as a matchup heuristic (e,g, “Skaven should always kick”) into a question of when you want clarity, and how much uncertainty you are prepared to tolerate before committing to a plan. This clarity is something that might change in team situations compared with individual matchups depending on your role in the team/round. More on this in section 8.
Signalling and Hidden Intentions
Information isn’t just limited to the board state itself, but also the playstyle of your opponent. The first turns of a match vs an hitherto-unknown opponent are valuable. Through their action sequencing, positioning, and then at every decision point thereafter you learn a little more about the type of playstyle they prefer, strengths and weaknesses. Understanding how they approach situations (e.g. how they look at potential 1/9s or 1D blocks) will give you insight into what they will want to do going forward, which makes it easier to anticipate and prevent or to set traps.
If you know you are being assessed by your opponent, then you can control what the person assessing you sees. Signalling refers to actions that convey information to your opponent, intentionally or otherwise. Almost every positional choice functions as a signal. Player placement, gaps (real or apparent), cage shape (X, venga bus etc), and threat orientation all communicate what you might do next… even if that communication is misleading.
Skilled players exploit signalling by presenting opponents with interpretations that are plausible but incomplete, forcing them to commit resources before the true threat is revealed. Trap space and distraction octopuses are two other kinds of signaling that come up frequently.
This concept explains why partial commitments are often stronger than full ones as discussed in part 4.
As GreenskinPhil said to me in our first game against one another “What’s better than two scoring threats?… Three scoring threats…and what’s better than three scoring threats? Four scoring threats!”. In all situations (not just sending frogs out to be hunted down in the backfield), by threatening multiple alternative lines you create ambiguous signals that expand the opponent’s perceived choice set. They must defend against several potential futures without knowing which will materialise. Conversely, committing too early collapses uncertainty in your opponent’s favour by allowing focused counterplay.

The power of signalling lies not in deception for its own sake, but in managing how much certainty your opponent can achieve before it is actionable.
In tabletop play, signalling goes beyond the pieces on the board. Coaches can signal verbally, intentionally shaping their opponent’s perception of risk and intent through spoken analysis, narration, or planning. Counting squares aloud and calculating odds of a cage dive, or announcing that a scoring threat is being set up (I’m looking at you GSP… i do this now too ofc) all communicate information, regardless of whether those lines are actually intended to be taken. These verbal cues function in much the same way as positional threats, presenting the opponent with futures they feel compelled to address even if those futures never materialise.
This kind of signalling operates by exploiting asymmetry in attention rather than in information. By externalising calculations or narrating possible dangers, a player can elevate certain risks in their opponent’s mind, causing them to overcommit resources defensively or to play more cautiously than the board strictly requires.
Importantly, the effectiveness of such signals does not depend on deception in the narrow sense. Simply drawing attention to unlikely but consequential outcomes can change how an opponent values their options. A cage dive that is improbable but catastrophic if successful can exert pressure well beyond its actual likelihood once it has been made salient.
Verbal signalling reveals something about control. In my experience, most good players talk through many of their turns. There is a balance to be struck between indecisive vs secure. Players who calmly articulate multiple possible futures can project an image of optionality and preparedness. As with positional signalling, the goal is not to mislead indiscriminately, but to manage how much certainty your opponent believes they have. Expert players use speech to widen their opponent’s perceived outcome space while keeping their own commitments private for as long as possible.
There is also an important ethical dimension. Verbal signalling works only when it remains within the shared understanding of the game as a contest of threats and responses, rather than descending into gamesmanship. Counting squares, naming threats, or thinking aloud about options are all part of normal high‑level play. There’s always dice on the ball.
Players can also unintentionally signal emotions; fear, impatience, or desperation through overly passive play, aggressive repositioning or premature commitment respectively, or possibly noticeable changes in behaviour. Read these cues and adjust play accordingly. Learning to control what you signal, and to read what your opponent is signalling back, is one of the least explicit yet a powerful skill that can be a difference maker at higher levels of play.
The skill lies in choosing when to make possibilities explicit and when to let them remain implicit.

Personal Development Objective
Reflection
In post‑game reflection, practice distinguishing between i) losses caused by poor information management (I had the information but didn’t act on it correctly), ii) losses caused by interpreting the information incorrectly (that “gaping hole” was actually trap space), and iii) losses caused by unfavourable resolution of genuine uncertainty (rubbish dice). Improvement shows when your decision‑making processes feel consistent, and stay consistent even across games with wildly different dice results.
In review, reflect on occasions where your opponent appeared to anticipate your top secret plan early, and consider what signals you may have given unintentionally. Try to identify situations where small adjustments could have changed the apparent intent.

Practice
Get into the practice of treating the first part of the first drive as an information‑gathering phase. Explicitly reassess your risk tolerance thereafter based on what you have learned about your opponent’s offence/defence, and their level of risk tolerance. Improvement is visible when your second‑half decisions accurately reflect earlier information rather than repeating the same patterns regardless of context.
A personal example here comes from recent BB3 ladder games playing with Vampires, I’ve come up against coaches who haven’t learned from the first time they came forward and I’ve aggressively hypnodazzled my way in to sack the ball. Whether or not those sacks worked, they should be aware that I am playing with a high appetite (not just bloodlust) for aggressive defence and modify their actions appropriately.
Other things to work on are becoming aware of what your actions communicate to your opponent, not just what they accomplish mechanically. During games, try to identify moments where you could present multiple plausible threats without committing fully to any of them.
Learn to use verbal signalling. Increase your awareness of how your speech affects opponent behaviour, and actively try to listen for signals embedded in your opponent’s commentary. You are looking for info about lines your opponent fears, which threats they downplay, and how their language shifts under pressure. Consciously talk through some of your own turns; try highlighting different lines that are open to you if you want your opponent to spread wider or narrow down the discussion if you want them to commit to a line.
Finally, and this should be obvious, but the signalling aspects almost entirely refers to future turns. Your opponent’s ability to react during your turn is only really in skills like side-step, stand firm, fend, taunt and shadowing decisions. Therefore, most of the time you can talk about most of that turn without providing any useful (actionable) information. This means your future intent signalling can be embedded into a regular narrative rather than suddenly blurting out “I could go left!”
